Beth Linker Is Turning Good Posture on Its Head
  + stars: | 2024-04-26 | by ( Matt Richtel | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
For decades, the idea of standing properly upright carried considerable political and social baggage. In the early 20th century, posture exams became mainstays in the military, the workplace and schools, thanks in part to the American Posture League, a group of physicians, educators and health officials that formed in 1914. In 1917, a study found that roughly 80 percent of Harvard’s freshman class had poor posture. But the actual science doesn’t support the conventional wisdom about proper posture, Beth Linker argues in her new book, “Slouch: Posture Panic in Modern America.” Dr. Linker, a historian and sociologist of science at the University of Pennsylvania, recently sat for an interview with The New York Times; the conversation has been condensed and edited for clarity. Your posture looks pretty good.

But, as they try to claim that mantle, many of those same forces in media and politics are behind a disturbing wave of book bans sweeping the nation. PEN America, a non-profit organization committed to protecting free expression, published an alarming report Tuesday indicating that the “book ban crisis” is only getting worse. “There were over 4,000 instances of book bans in the first half of this school year—more than all of last school year as a whole. In doing so, they have also disproportionately targeted books by women and nonbinary authors,” PEN America said. Ted Shaffrey/APSuch brazen book bans — unprecedented in modern American history — is at its worst in the red states of Florida and Texas.

Trump has floated a 10% across-the-board tariff on imports, a 60% tariff on imports from China and a 100% tariff on foreign cars – including from Mexico. Trump’s proposals, if enacted, could easily set off a new trade war with China and potentially other nations, too. Some economists are warning Trump’s trade agenda and the ensuing retaliation from trading partners would hurt the US economy by worsening inflation, killing jobs, depressing growth and spooking investors. It’s hard to say exactly because there is a lot of uncertainty over how much of Trump’s proposed agenda would actually be enacted. That’s because tariffs tax imports when they come ashore, adding costs for US distributors, retailers and, ultimately consumers.

Media magnate Rupert Murdoch, who turns 93 next week, has been married four times — and is engaged again, his representative said Saturday. He plans to marry Elena Zhukova, 67, a Russian-born retired scientist he met last year. Their daughter Dasha was previously married to Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, who used to own the Premier League football club Chelsea. Murdoch has been married four times and shares six children with three of his wives. These four Murdoch children have the same stake in the family trust and an equal say in what happens to the trust’s voting stock upon Murdoch’s death.

Joe Biden is one of the most unpopular presidents in modern American history. In Gallup polling, his approval ratings are lower than those of any president embarking on a re-election campaign, from Dwight Eisenhower to Donald Trump. Apart from anxiety about his age, there isn’t a chattering-class consensus or common shorthand for why his presidency is such a political flop. When things went south for other recent chief executives, there was usually a clearer theory of what was happening. Trump’s unpopularity was understood to reflect his chaos and craziness and authoritarian forays.

The president delivered a campaign speech in Pennsylvania this afternoon, and he will speak tomorrow in Georgia — two swing states that he is counting on for re-election. The push is meant to capitalize on momentum from last night’s address, in which Biden delivered a series of fiery attacks against Trump, casting him as a threat to American democracy and stability in the world. Roughly 28 million people watched on major cable and broadcast networks, according to preliminary numbers, a bigger prime-time audience than last year. The speech also allowed Biden, 81, to respond to doubts about his age with impassioned lines that were clearly intended to demonstrate vigor. It remains unclear if he can repeat that energetic 67-minute performance as he barnstorms the swing states in the coming weeks.

“We’re going to win this election because we have no choice,” Trump said at his Mar-a-Lago resort as he savored his sweetest election night since he beat Hillary Clinton in 2016. The time for that excuse is going to fast run out now that the shape of the 2024 general election is clear. “Until now, people didn’t think it was going to be Biden versus Trump, but here we are and we’re ready to go,” he said. One reason why Trump didn’t come across as a loser to his supporters was that he convinced grassroots GOP voters that he didn’t actually lose the 2020 election. Democratic control of the Senate and the tiny House GOP majority that fell short of red wave expectations were widely blamed on his botched strategizing.

CNN —If the Democratic voters of Michigan – and a handful of other swing states – are feeling uncommitted in November, Joe Biden could lose reelection. Democratic primary voters in Michigan have the option to mark their ballot as “uncommitted.” In 2012, even President Barack Obama suffered 20,000 such defections. Four years later, Biden rebuilt the blue wall and carried Michigan by around 150,000 votes. Biden has dispatched campaign and White House aides to Michigan to try to explain his politics toward Israel. “The American president can’t say who he wants the prime minister of Israel to be,” Biden campaign official Mitch Landrieu told CNN as the results from Michigan rolled in.

Monday’s Supreme Court showdown in NetChoice v. Paxton and Moody v. NetChoice will determine whether states can forbid social media companies from blocking or removing user content that goes against platform rules. The Florida and Texas laws are broadly written, but officials from both states say the laws will keep social media sites from unfairly silencing conservatives. Social media platforms have insisted for years that they don’t discriminate against right-wing speech. Bob’s Red Mill Natural Foods was founded in 1978, but it wasn’t until several years later that the company hit upon the thing that made its oats, groats and other natural food products so immediately recognizable on supermarket shelves. That was when the likeness of Bob Moore, the company’s eponymous founder, began appearing on the packaging. With his white beard, wire-rim eyeglasses, newsie cap and bolo tie, Mr. Moore, who died last week at age 94, was an unlikely style icon whose folksiness seemed to personify the wholesome artisanal grains produced by his company at an old mill in Milwaukie, Ore.Mr. Moore may not have been a movie star like Paul Newman, whose face similarly adorns Newman’s Own foods, but he became just as recognizable to anyone who has pushed a shopping cart down a grains and nuts aisle. An illustration of Mr. Moore appears on the packaging for each of his brand’s more than 400 products, from hulled millet to yellow popcorn, next to the tagline, “To Your Good Health.” The text on the Bob’s Red Mill bags and boxes, rendered in homey fonts that might have been used to sell tinctures in the Old West, includes bits of found poetry (“golden spurtle”) and understated hucksterism (“good source of fiber”). The distinctive but unflashy branding, a piece of modern Americana that falls somewhere between hippie and Norman Rockwell, makes for an oasis of calm in crowded supermarkets.

The Fight Over Academic Freedom

Academic freedom is a bedrock of the modern American university. For many scholars, the biggest danger is at public universities in Republican-controlled states like Florida, where Gov. But at some elite private campuses, faculty have increasingly begun organizing against a very different threat. Over the past year, faculty groups dedicated to academic freedom have sprung up at Harvard, Yale and Columbia, where even some liberal scholars argue that a prevailing progressive orthodoxy has created a climate of self-censorship and fear that stifles open inquiry. And it has also scrambled the politics of academic freedom itself.

The pomp, the glamour, the conflicts, the characters: When it comes to Britain's royal family, Americans can't seem to get enough. That was evident this week following the announcement of King Charles III's treatment for cancer. They're references for power and prestige, like Aretha Franklin as the “Queen of Soul” or the administration of John F. Kennedy as Camelot. There was a social and cultural element as well: In the 19th century, some rich Americans would find husbands for their daughters among the British aristocracy. And of course, the 20th century has plenty of examples of music, television, etc., that traveled between the two societies.

The ex-president is trying to intimidate Nikki Haley into abandoning the GOP presidential race. Trump’s brisk assertion of his growing power as the likely nominee is a characteristic dismantling of constraints that echoes his behavior in office. But she provoked him by refusing to quickly fold her campaign and endorse him like other GOP candidates, including Florida Gov. But the disdain toward Haley from Trump world is remarkable. It would have essentially joined the party’s forces with Trump while an election involving a rival was still taking place.

"(The) president has got to change course.”"You cannot give billions of dollars to a country that ignores your wishes, violates international law," he said. But Sanders said the president has been “very clear" about his concerns for the people of Gaza, citing Biden’s comments about “indiscriminate bombing” and pressure the administration has put on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to adjust the IDF's strategy in Gaza. “I would hope that the president follows through on his concerns,” Sanders continued, calling on Biden to tell Netanyahu, “You aren’t getting a nickel more from the United States unless you radically change course.”

Perhaps no federal officeholder in modern American history has been accused of ignoring, testing or breaking as many aspects of campaign finance law so flagrantly, in such a short span of time, as George Santos has. But his case, while sensational, illustrates the profound weaknesses of the system, and its potential for abuse. For years, campaign finance laws have eroded, while the watchdogs responsible for their oversight have been weakened by limited powers, underfunding and political stalemate. “He is an extreme example of something that is happening all the time in campaign finance,” said Saurav Ghosh, a former Federal Election Commission enforcement lawyer who is now the director of federal campaign finance reform at the Campaign Legal Center, a watchdog group. Mr. Santos, he suggested, was able to take advantage of “the overall under-regulation of money that is raised and spent on election influence.”
